Do I stay or do I go (home)?
Hi fam,
We’re in it now, 2025.
And our boy Dr. Vivek Murthy, (The outgoing U.S. Surgeon General) provided the American people with a simple but urgent parting prescription: prioritize connection and mental health. This prescription is a staunch reminder that loneliness and connection are central to our wellbeing. Having healthy, meaningful relationships can not only improve our mental health but our physical wellbeing and longevity, too.
And while the importance of relational health is clear, solitude, when intentional, can also be powerful. The act of being alone clears mental clutter, fosters creativity, and builds sustainability in an otherwise always-on world. In moments of solitude self-awareness grows and ideas take root.
Solitude changes when it becomes persistent and unintentional. It becomes loneliness: feelings of disconnection, disengagement.
So, what do you do when solitude turns into loneliness? Finding connection helps. Peer groups, for example, offer an impactful way to share experiences, seek support, and break through loneliness and isolation. Groups of peers can remind us that we don’t have to navigate life alone
Much like all else, the key is balance. Solitude can ground you, but sometimes it’s connection that transforms you. Loneliness isn’t a moral failure; it’s a signal—a reminder to reach for deeper, more meaningful ties.
Ask yourself: Is solitude helping or is it hurting?
Either way, you’re not alone in figuring it out. Reply to this message and let us know: do you lean toward solitude or prioritize relationships and community? Maybe somewhere in between?
That’s all for this week. In the meantime don’t forget to:
