Most conversations about stress focus on how we respond to it—breathe more, sleep better, download this app. But very few ask the question: what’s causing stress in the first place?

Stress is embedded in how most organizations function—through overloaded calendars, unclear priorities, poor communication, and nonstop availability.

It accumulates slowly.
Increases quietly.

And shows up everywhere: reduced focus, shallow output, rising turnover, and teams that are technically functioning but mentally checked out.

The default settings of modern work—speed, access, visibility—generate chronic stress. Awareness isn’t the problem. Lack of change is.

What reduces stress load:
• Scoped roles and focused workflows
• Time protection policies that leaders actually follow
• Manager norms that reduce ambiguity

What compounds it:
• Vague expectations layered over high accountability
• Constant tool-switching and scattered requests
• Messaging that gestures at mental health without structural change
