Depression 101
In our continuous mission to promote mental health education and demystify the signs and symptoms of common illnesses, let’s look at depression.
Depression is a mental health condition characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness or a lack of interest in external activities. It can significantly impact how a person feels, thinks, and manages daily tasks.
And recent statistics tell a story that's hard to ignore—about 1 in 6 adults in the US will experience depression at some point. These numbers reflect a broader issue that intersects with our culture, our mental healthcare system, and our collective well-being. So let’s unpack.
What to Watch For
The symptoms of depression can vary widely but often include:
A constant feeling of sadness, anxiety, or emptiness
Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
Changes in appetite — either not eating enough or eating too much
Problems with sleep, whether it's too little or too much
A decrease in energy or increased fatigue
Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions
Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
Thoughts of death or suicide
Well-being Strategies
In addition to professional help, certain lifestyle changes can support mental health:
⏰Keeping a regular routine
🏃Staying active with physical exercise
🥗Eating a balanced diet
😴Prioritizing sleep
🫂Connecting with others, even if it's virtually
Remember This 💭
Seeking help is a sign of strength, and support is always available.
Here are a few places to start:
