The advocacy for public mental health
Last month Dr. Vivek Murthy along with his 6 living predecessors gathered at Dartmouth College to discuss mental health and the crisis our nation currently faces.
Regardless of whether serving under a conservative or more moderate president, each surgeon general emphasized the importance of addressing the mental health crisis head on.
Dartmouth’s president Sian Leah Beilock agreed, stating “nationwide, mental health is an urgent challenge that health care professionals, educators, and leaders at every level must address head on.”
(If you have roughly 2 hours to spare, check out the discussion here).
So who is our current U.S. Surgeon General?
If stanning is still a thing, we officially stan our current U.S. Surgeon General. Few in this role have brought as personal and determined a touch to the arena of mental health.
One of Dr. Murthy's most salient contributions has been highlighting the health implications of loneliness, framing the issue not merely as a social one but a significant health concern.
His dedication to this subject, backed by research linking loneliness to numerous health complications, has ensured the topic became a pivotal conversation regarding public health.
In addition, Dr. Murthy has:
Released an advisory on the impacts of social media on the mental health of children and adolescents
Called for renewed efforts to facilitate social connection
Advised the country to invest more in primary care and train more mental health providers
Produced a framework for workplace mental health and well-being, stating that a healthy workforce is the foundation for thriving organizations and healthier communities
Under Dr. Murthy's guidance, mental health has begun to occupy a more prominent, deserved place in the national health discourse. His initiatives, partnerships, and emphasis on individual and collective well-being have set a foundation for current and future work in the domain.
With his distinctive combination of clinical acumen, compassionate leadership, and vision, he has indelibly marked the landscape of mental health in America (and for that, we stan).
